Cold Laser Treatments with Chiropractic Care for Reducing Chronic Pain in the Santa Barbara, Goleta area.
By Dr. Valerie Girard, Santa Barbara Chiropractor and Cold Laser Practitioner
As a Santa Barbara chiropractor for over 25 years, I have found that the use of cold laser therapy has quickly alleviated chronic pain, reduced scarring and accelerated the recovery process for many of my chiropractic patients. Because the cold laser is able to re-establish nerve pathways, it enhances the healing process and decreases inflammation and pain. Sometimes the laser can immediately relieve pain. I have seen bruising diminish significantly in one session. 3-7 minute applications can be extremely effective in healing a variety of conditions.

Cold laser therapy for back pain and joint pain by an experienced chiropractor can get you back to your life sooner.
What is Cold Laser Therapy? Dr. Valerie Girard uses cold laser therapy or Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in her Santa Barbara chiropractic practice and has found it to be one method in successfully reducing pain. It is clinically proven to stimulate damaged tissues, reduce scarring, hasten healing, decrease inflammation and reduce pain. This laser light can be administered to joints, muscles, vertebra, tendons or sinuses to reduce inflammation. They are extremely safe with no pain as they are not "hot" lasers. LLLT often reduces the need for medication, especially NSAID's. Treatments are usually one to fifteen minutes long and are a fantastic adjunct to a spinal or extremity adjustment. The goal of laser therapy is to deliver light energy units from infrared laser radiation, called photons, to damaged cells.
Many chiropractors throughout the US are using Cold Laser Therapy to augment their treatments. A bulk of clinical studies have shown that these treatments are highly effective in reducing pain and other health issues. Cold Laser offers pain control by reducing inflammation and irritation. Over 4000 clinical studies have been conducted in recent years to validate the effectiveness of cold laser therapy. Dr. Girard uses the Erchonia Cold Laser, one of the finest and most renowned cold lasers available.
How Quickly Does Cold Laser Therapy Work for Pain or Injuries?
Often the pain reduction can be almost instantaneous. The positive effects remain and if an adjustment is also delivered during the treatment, pain levels may continue to decrease over the following days. Dr. Girard's patients have often experienced instantaneous results with treatment of wounds, bruises, foot injuries, Carpal Tunnel, knee and shoulder pain, fractures and low back pain. Often, pain, bruises and scars change during the course of the treatment.

What is a Cold Laser Treatment and How Does it Work?
Cold Laser Therapy or Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a treatment that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with the cells of the body. Each cell in the body has an ability to respond to different frequencies of light, measured in Hertz or hz.. Cold lasers donate energy/photons to cells, which in turn stimulates the mitochondria to produce more ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) or in laymen’s term, ENERGY. More ATP energy means healthier cells to regenerate and help the body heal.
The consensus of experts is that photons absorbed by the cells through laser therapy stimulate the mitochondria to accelerate production of ATP. This biochemical increase in cell energy is used to transform live cells from a state of illness to a stable, healthy state.
Cold lasers exist in varying formats from small handheld to larger units with multiple applicators. The laser heads are placed over injured tissues including wounds, incisions, contusions, and swollen joints. With professionally used lasers, specific frequencies are programmed and may run in sequence or simultaneously.
How Cold Laser Treatments Reduce Pain and Accelerate Your Healing Process:
Because the cold laser is able to re-establish nerve pathways it improves the function of organs and glands, reduces inflammation and enhances healing of a variety of injured tissues.
LLLT may also be used on acupuncture points and are specifically powerful when used as auricular therapy. There are corresponding acupuncture points that relate to organs in different states of health or disease. These entry points are closer to the brain and may be instantly effective when specific frequencies are administered.
In addition, there are areas on the body that have a direct and specific effect on organs when stimulation provided by the laser is applied. The Cold Laser, therefore, can be used to stimulate detox, immune function, reduce inflammation, promote healing and improve function in almost every aspect of the body.
Since owning and operating a Erconia Laser for the last seven years, I have had tremendous success with healing a variety of health issues with my patients. By combining LLLT with specific chiropractic adjustments to the area of involvement as well as associated areas, a patient’s progress is maximized.
What are the Benefits of Cold Laser Therapy?
The Erchonia laser may be also used to treat acupuncture points, ear acupuncture points especially those related to a balanced nervous system. Laser light therapy can be administered to joints, muscles, vertebra, tendons or sinuses to reduce inflammation. I have seen the use of cold laser treatments reduce the need for medication, especially NSAID's. Cold Laser treatments can help you by:
-
Increased Cell Growth: Laser photons accelerates cellular reproduction and growth.
-
Increased Metabolic Activity: Photons initiate a higher outputs of specific enzymes, greater oxygen and food particle loads for blood cells and thus greater production of the basic food source for cells, Adenosine Tri-Phosphate (ATP).
-
Faster Wound Healing: Cold laser photons stimulates fibroblast development and accelerates collagen synthesis in damaged tissue
-
Anti-Inflammatory Action: Laser photons reduce swelling caused by bruising or inflammation of joints resulting in enhanced joint mobility.
-
Increased Vascular Activity: Laser photons induce temporary vasodilation that increases blood flow to effected areas.
-
Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation: Laser photons reduce the formation of scar tissue following tissue damage from: cuts, scratches, burns or post surgery.
-
Stimulated Nerve Function: Laser photon exposure speeds the process of nerve cell reconnection to bring the numb areas back to life.
